Power Dynamics: Are You on Remote Control?
Future Rise Newsletter #12
Most people don't realize that they're constantly engaged in a flow of
power. Power dynamics isn't about dominance, it's about:
• how you stand
• the tone of voice you use
• the words you choose
• how you position yourself in conversations
• how you show up in the world.
You're Either Handing People a Remote Control
or a User Manual
The remote control means others get to choose how to treat you. The
user manual means you're clearly showing them how you want to be
treated with clarity, boundaries, and standards.
Imagine that you're getting a new device, if you don't read the manual,
you can't use it properly. The same applies to how people engage with
you.
I see this playing out all over the world in interpersonal interactions.
People saying "sorry" all the time, and constantly put themselves in an
apologetic position. I say, "excuse me" and not "sorry" because I'm not
sorry. I'm simply moving through space.
Or when someone calls another person "sir". That language puts
someone on a pedestal. Cleaner or CEO, we're all human. I don't see
superiors or inferiors. I see brothers and sisters. That's called
interiority, standing in your own power without comparison.
And finally, calling things "expensive". That one word puts what you
want just out of reach. I used to say that about business class flights.
Today, I travel the world to engage with clients who value what I bring.
Why? Because I rewrote my user manual.

Actionable Insight
Next time you engage with someone, ask yourself am I giving them a
remote control or user manual?
And if it's the remote control, it's time to break it, and pick up the user
manual.
Until next week…keep rising with power!
